Designing modern interiors through the lens of history.

Mid-century design has re-emerged as a movement in contemporary interiors — is it as nostalgia? Or a return to material honesty, craftsmanship and emotional connection after the last few years of cream on cream?

We’re inspired by the textures and materials of the past to inform how spaces feel today. Every building has its own story, and our role is to read it — using material, colour and form to create interiors that belong to their setting and support modern life.

Bold marbles, earthy tones and layered textures can be interpreted in many ways. Sometimes that means a single considered element in a contemporary home; in buildings with history, those same materials can be expressed more fully and still feel timeless.

Good design isn’t about rules or trends.
It’s about understanding place — and telling the next chapter of a building’s story through its interior.

Q.Do you think this shift back towards bold colour, pattern and texture is a natural response to a few years of very pared-back cream on cream interiors?
It feels like our senses are naturally craving stimulation again.

Small En-Suite Design Tips

Often the smallest room in the home, en-suites can be the hardest to get right.
Tight layouts, fixed services and awkward windows mean you can’t always “do the ideal”.

Ideally, we’d run WC, basin and shower along one wall.
But when that’s not possible, good design starts with the floor plan.

•Wall-hung WC & concealed cisterns to free up floor space
• Walk-in showers with fixed glass to keep sightlines open
• Built-out walls used smartly for pipework and recessed niches
• Compact or freestanding basins where runs are restricted
• Sliding or pocket doors to avoid wasted space

These rooms work because the layout was designed around the constraints — not forced against them.

Small spaces need careful thinking, not compromise.

This is my latest design for a luxury holiday rental, currently being carefully updated. The property is a true 1960s build — complete with original timber ceilings and all the charm (and challenges!) of a home that’s been stuck in the 70s… but not in a good way.

Rather than stripping out its character, the aim was to embrace the mid-century bones and elevate them for modern living. Think rich textures, earthy tones, layered lighting and clean lines — all designed to feel calm, warm and quietly indulgent, while still respecting the era of the house.

And a little detail I always love to include 👀
I hide one of my favourite films on the TV in every visual — something for people to spot and see if they can name it.

This space didn’t always look like this.

Formerly the Clwyd Gate Motel, the building had been left vacant for years and was close to demolition when I first visited the site. Parts of the structure had deteriorated significantly, but the location — and the panoramic views across the Ruthin Valley — told a different story.

The brief was to transform the property into a luxury boutique retreat, designed around calm guest experience, longevity and commercial performance rather than short-term trends.

Opened in February 2022, Clwyd Gate Manor continues to perform strongly today — a reminder that considered hospitality interiors don’t just make an impact on opening, they endure.

This year’s Christmas is rooted in nature.
A carefully curated palette of forest greens, weathered neutrals and antique bronze.
Matte velvet ornaments, organic details and flowing ribbons add softness and movement, while the pheasant’s colouring grounds the scheme.

The old church school hall Halkyn.
An architectural space with historic presence deserves a focal point that matches its scale and character. In the former Church School Hall, the existing fireplace lacked identity and visual weight within the room. Our approach was to create a new statement fire that not only anchors the space, but also honours the building’s heritage.

We designed and constructed a bold fire breast to sit in front of the original opening, hand-finished in authentic with layered mineral liquid bronze to create a naturally patinated bronze surface. The aim was not decoration, but depth, movement and a finish that feels timeworn rather than newly applied.

Throughout the room, we made considered decisions to preserve and reveal original structure. The ceiling beams had been coated in decades of varnish, masking their grain and character. We chose to sandblast them back to the raw oak, uncovering beautiful, hand-forged wrought iron fixings that had long been hidden. These have been protected with a matt clear seal, allowing the true history of the building to be visible once again.

The walls have been replastered in breathable lime and finished in natural limewash to maintain the integrity of the original fabric. The original timber floor was carefully restored, returning warmth and authenticity underfoot.

The resulting palette blends rustic heritage texture with a modern, refined calm. Sculptural lighting, tactile textiles and crafted materials coexist quietly and confidently within the architecture.

A room grounded in its past, yet entirely present in the way it now lives.

Project Spotlight: Rhosneigr | The Plas

This is a 17th Century manor house with a rich history, extended and adapted over many lifetimes. Our role is to bring it back to its former glory, while ensuring it speaks beautifully to modern comfort and quiet luxury.

The previous owner had a deep love for antiques and spent many years collecting unique pieces. As part of honouring that legacy, we have chosen to retain and reimagine selected items, including the armoire, the grand four-poster bed, and the original fireplace.

We also chose to restore rather than replace — the original timber flooring has been sanded back, re-stained, and given a new life as the foundation of the scheme.

Working with heritage buildings requires sensitivity — the balance between character and contemporary relevance must feel effortless. This bedroom suite blends:
• Original craftsmanship
• Soft layered neutrals
• Statement lighting
• Natural textures

Creating a space that feels elegant, grounded and deeply serene.

Experience an exquisite ‘quiet’ luxury vibe that permeates every corner! The natural tones and light textures come together to craft a stunningly dramatic yet understated luxury aesthetic throughout the interiors. One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was watching the interiors take shape almost exactly as envisioned in the concept designs. It’s always a special moment seeing drawings and moodboards evolve into real spaces that people can live in and enjoy.
The double-height lounge and mezzanine became a true showpiece, capturing the building’s volume and character while creating a stunning, memorable interior that leaves a lasting impression.

Perhaps the most fulfilling transformation, however, was the conversion of the old Sunday School hall into a swimming pool and SPA. Working closely with contractors, who followed the detailed drawings and specifications I developed, brought this vision to life beautifully. The result was a space that embodies both luxury and tranquillity — a highlight of the project for everyone involved.

Designing with Heritage in Mind

As an interior designer, I’ve always believed that every building has a story to tell. Its architecture, materials, and history all shape the way it feels — and for me, that story should always guide the interior design.

When working on a project, I take time to explore the building’s heritage and past use — when it was built, what it once was, and what makes it unique. These details often form the foundation of my design direction, influencing everything from the choice of materials to lighting and furniture.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing a few of my favourite projects that beautifully illustrate this philosophy:

The Plas, Rhosneigr — this is a project we are currently designing , parts of this historic property date back to the 1600s, and our design approach carefully celebrates its centuries of evolution.

Rhos Sea Manor — originally built as a church in 1921, this project reimagines the space with a modern nod to the Arts & Crafts era, using natural materials and arts & craft inspired detail.

Old School Hall Halkyn — dating back to 1849, this former school from the Grosvenor Estate has been transformed into a refined, modern interior while honouring its industrial and educational roots.

Your en-suite might be one of the smallest rooms in your home — but With the right mix of lighting and texture, even a compact space can feel elegant, relaxing, and full of character.

Preview of one of our recently completed interior designs: an old school hall, lovingly brought back to life after years of neglect. As a listed building, we’ve preserved as much of its heritage as possible – even the old headmaster’s cane and a couple of original cast-iron school desks have found their place again.

The beams were one of the most rewarding discoveries: we carefully stripped away decades of paint and varnish to reveal the most beautiful ironwork details beneath.

Walls are finished in soft limewash, creating a calm, tactile backdrop. We’ve added subtle nods to the building’s history, like apple ornaments scattered throughout. The overall look is modern rustic – a style I adore – with just a few industrial touches to honour the building’s original character.

We've been busy working on a few projects recently, this is one we'd like to showcase its a full ground floor refurbishment project in Prestwich for a lovely client, the brief is to extend the ground floor to accommodate a full living , ding family kitchen looking out onto re-landscaped gardens , whist adding a downstairs shower room, new staircase , utility room with a reimagining dining room.

In contrast, the boys' bedrooms embrace a moody yet neutral palette – timeless foundations that evolve with age. Bold graffiti art adds personality now, while easily transitioning into iconic black-and-white imagery down the line. One of the rooms we designed for our latest luxury escape holiday home in wales.
We used texture to add a rustic tone to the room, adding oversized basket lights to create illuminated patterns enhancing the textures.
The room also has a freestanding bath for the more daring as well as an en-suite including a shower.
The rustic elements have been taken through to the en-suite with a freestanding wood vanity unit, adding echos of the churches era with classic brass fittings.

We love designing bespoke interiors , all bedrooms in this 13 bedroom property are all unique in design.
